Strong alkalies must be avoided in the scouring of acetate, since the surface of the cellulose acetate would be saponified by such treatment. Scouring is frequently carried out on the jig with approx 1 Ib. of surfactant and 4 oz of 26 degree Be ammonia per 100 gal or 0.5-1 Ib tetrasodium pyrophosphate at 150-1080F for 30 min. Delustered acetate may be scoured at temperatures up to 2000F. Blends of spun viscose rayon and acetate may normally be handled as acetate alone. Acetate crepes may be set by passing the material under pressure between an engraved stell roller at 160-1800F and a second roller of compressed cotton. This embossing controls the pebble of the crepe which is formed during scouring.
