Elastic fibres, which are chemically segmented polyurethanes, are usually combined with nonelastic fibres of other types to give fabrics with controlled elasticity. Processing chemicals must be carefully selected to protect  all fibres present in the blend. Prior to scouring, spandex fabrics are normally steamed to relax uneven tensions placed on the fibres during weaving. Scoring, to remove lubricates and sizing, is normally conducted with aqueous solutions of synthetic detergents and tetrasodium pyrophosphate, with aqueous solutions of synthetic detergents and tetrasodium pyrophosphate, with aqueous emulsions of perchlorethylene or with mineral spirits and sodium pyrophosphate.
