DYES FOR LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAYS (LCD'S):-
personal computers and electronic dash-board components for automobiles. The main advantage is low power consumption and operating voltage. The drawbacks, relating to the necessary use of polarising layers with attendant loss of brightness and limited viewing angle have been overcome by the addition of soluble dichroic dyes to the liquid crystal media, thus avoiding the necessity of polarisers. These 'guest-host' displays are of two types, twisted nematic and dye phase change displays. Their mechanistic interpretation has been described in simple terms.
