Photosensitisers and dyes for PDT:-

It has also been observed that positively charged dyes can be preferentially absorbed on negatively charged carcinoma cells and mitochondria surface membranes. The dye (29), i.e., 1,1'-(2-ethyl)-1,3-dioxylanekryptocyanine with a lmax = 713 nm, on irradiation, effected a 10,000-fold reduction compared with control cells in the treatment of bladder cancer. Such techniques, coupling the use of photosensitive dyes and laser technology in the fight against cancer are proving to be most promising. Problems still outstanding, relating to the transmission of i.r. radiation through healthy tissue and its power tolerance remain to be solved.
