BIOLOGICAL AND MEDICAL USES OF DYES:-

It is no accident that the close association between dye and pharmaceutical industries, extending over the past 100 years, owes its origin to the fact that certain dyes have biological application. At an early stage, basic dyes, e.g., Crystal Violet (C.I. Basic violet 3) were found preferentially to stain certain bacteria [106] and others, such as Acriflavine, were used as anti-bacterial agents. Later, the sulphanilamide drugs which inhibit the formation of p-aminobenzoic acid- an essential growth factor in micro organisms-became available [107]. Gordon and Gregory [3] have recently reviewed these developments.
