Aminoazotoluene preparation

An enamelled kettle provided with a cooling bath is charged with 200 Kg. of o-tolulidine, 117 Kg. of 30% hydrochloric acid and 28 Kg. of sodium chloride. The contents are cooled to 250C and 155 Kg. of 40% sodium nitrite solution is added at 250-270C during 10-11 hours, warmed to 350C and held thereat for 24 hours.
