Acrylic staple fiber production decreased by 5% in 2005 to 2.52 million tons. Production sharply decreased in Korea (down 49%) due to company withdrawals from this business, as well as in the U.S. (down 94%). There were also reports of withdrawals in Mexico and Turkey. Meanwhile, production increased by 11% in Taiwan thanks to favorable exports,and by 4% in ASEAN. Production in Western Europe (the largest producer) remained at about the same level due to a demand recovery in and around the region. 
The Japan Chemical Fibers Association reported that the nation’s production of man-made fibers decreased by 3.1% in 2006 from the previous year to 1.21 million tons. Of this, synthetic fibers declined by 2.7% to 1.061 million tons, and cellulosic fibers by 5.9% to 149,000 tons.
